Abstract | Co-seismic Ionospheric disturbances or ionoquakes are disturbances in the ionosphere generated during the earthquakes. The present study reports the rapid development of co-seismic TEC disturbances within 400 seconds from the onset for the Illapel earthquake 2015 Mw 8.3, occurred on September 16, 2015, at 22:54:32 UT. The spectral and propagation characteristics reveal that they are high frequency acoustic oscillations that propagate with the acoustic speed in the range of 0.8-1.5 km/s. Therefore, their origin altitude is in the upper thermosphere above 200 km, in contrast to the previously reported rapid ionoquakes from altitudes lower than 200 km. The rapid development of ionoquakes above 200 km altitude demonstrates the robust energetics of seismo-atmosphere-ionosphere coupling. Numerical simulation based on the Seismic-Atmosphere-Ionosphere coupling mechanism and Acoustic-Gravity Waves (AGWs) energy confirm the rapid arrival of AGWs at ionospheric heights and the development of ionoquakes as early as 400 seconds after the onset of the earthquake. |
